3. Creative Project One-to-Ones
What are Creative Project One-to-Ones?
Creative Project One-to-Ones are personalised conversations for people who are considering, undertaking or have recently completed a significant creative project.
The service is based on Steve Conway’s own experience of spending more than five years pursuing and completing a self-funded, no-budget feature film outside the traditional film industry, and the practical and personal lessons that experience provided.
The purpose of these sessions is to provide an honest, independent perspective and help you think more clearly about your own situation.
The service is not intended to tell you whether you should or should not pursue a particular project. The aim is to help you examine your motivations, expectations, circumstances and potential challenges so that you can make a more informed decision for yourself.
Who is this service for?
Creative Project One-to-Ones may be useful if you are:
- Considering taking on a major creative project
- About to begin an ambitious project
- Already deep into a long-term project
- Struggling with motivation, doubt or direction
- Questioning whether your project is still worth pursuing
- Finding that the project is consuming more of your life than expected
- Struggling with perfectionism or over-investment
- Comparing your progress with others
- Approaching the end of a major project
- Unsure what happens after completing a major project
- Trying to understand what the experience is doing to your wider life, identity or priorities
- Simply looking for an experienced outside perspective on something you have committed yourself to
The service is not limited to filmmaking and may be relevant to other significant creative or personal projects.
What might we discuss?
Depending on your circumstances, conversations may explore:
- Why you are taking on the project in the first place
- Whether your reasons for doing it are strong enough to sustain the journey
- What you realistically expect the project to give you
- Expectations around money, recognition, awards, success or external validation
- The potential personal and practical cost of pursuing the project
- Ambition, persistence and motivation
- Perfectionism and over-investment
- Maintaining a life outside the project
- Your identity and how it may become connected to the project
- Relationships, time and personal priorities
- Dealing with setbacks and uncertainty
- Whether you are being persistent or simply continuing because you have already invested so much
- What happens when the project eventually ends
- What you might do differently with the benefit of hindsight
- How to approach the project with greater clarity and realistic expectations
Is this therapy or professional mental-health advice?
No.
Creative Project One-to-Ones are based primarily on Steve Conway’s own experience, knowledge, observations and reflections gained from pursuing a major long-term creative project.
They are not therapy, counselling, psychological assessment, medical advice or a substitute for professional mental-health support.
If you are experiencing mental-health difficulties or believe you require professional support, you should seek assistance from an appropriately qualified professional.
Does Steve tell me whether I should pursue my project?
No.
The purpose of the service is not to make the decision for you.
The aim is to provide an experienced outside perspective and help you examine the situation from different angles so that you can make your own informed decision.
What can I expect from a session?
Every session will be different because every project and situation is different.
The aim is for you to leave the conversation with greater clarity around whatever you are currently trying to work through.
Depending on your circumstances, this may include:
- A clearer understanding of your motivations
- Greater perspective on your situation
- A better understanding of potential challenges
- Greater confidence in your next decision
- A clearer idea of what you need to consider or address
- A more realistic understanding of what the project may require from you
- A clearer sense of your next steps
No particular outcome is guaranteed.
